In Disney’s iconic movie, Frozen, the lead character, Elsa, has moment of self-discovery where she embraces the unique power within her that she has always previously considered a burden.

With style and flair, she bursts out into the movie’s famed song “Let It Go”! Such a catchy tune! 🙂

I actually often use the song’s chorus on myself!…“Let it Go, Elsa!” I tell myself, when I’m replaying a negative thought over and over again in my head.

But the same phrase aptly applies to letting go of physical things, the key “decluttering” piece that is critical to any organizing project.

Renowned organizer Peter Walsh talks about certain items in our homes being “malignant”. They have a negative associative memory and a negative effect on our spaces and lives. (I would submit negative thoughts can also be categorized as “malignant”.)

Looking more closely at the Frozen “Let It Go” lyrics, I see many similarities in the emotions that come up when you’re living in a cluttered and disorganized space:

The feeling of isolation because you feel like you can’t have people over…
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I’m the queen

The feeling of internal chaos that reflects the disorder of the environment/situation
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn’t keep it in, heaven knows I’ve tried

The feeling of shame because you are embarrassed about your space or because you don’t “have it all together”
Don’t let them in, don’t let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know

And yet…the song also references similarities to the positive emotions that come up when you take that step and begin to let go…

The feelings of relief and release when you summon the courage and wherewithal to clear things out of your life
Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door

The feelings of personal power, pride, and breakthrough when you realize you really didn’t need that stuff you’d been holding on to
It’s funny how some distance makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me can’t get to me at all
It’s time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through

The feeling of freedom that comes with letting go of things that no longer serve you
I’m free
Let it go, let it go

The feeling of living in the incredible power of the present, no longer bound by the past
I’m never going back, the past is in the past
Let it go

The feeling of contentment when you let go of the need for perfection
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone

Elsa had her struggles, like all of us! But this song always pumps me up and reminds me of the power of letting go of the “malignant” in your life, whether physical or mental.  Letting go of the malignant makes room for all the good things that are coming your way.

Now go play this song from YouTube and spend four minutes tidying, decluttering, and/or organizing your space! Let it Go!

The natural result of an organizing project is often a whole bunch of items set aside to donate.

One thing that stops up clients in this phase of the organizing process is that the donation pile sits at their front door for weeks.  It can be very deflating to be tripping over the donation pile after a particularly productive organizing session (and there’s also the risk that some of those purged items may make their way back into the home).

There are a couple quick and easy solutions.

1) Load your car with the donations immediately after the project
If you aren’t available to take them to the donation spot right then, schedule it in your calendar to do so in the next 48 hours.  If I go this route, I put the donation on my front seat so its presence there will *annoy* me and I’ll be sure to drop it off STAT! 😉

2) Coordinate a donation pickup via www.donatetogetherhawaii.com
Donate Together Hawaii is a partnership between three local charities to do donation pickups in Oahu neighborhoods every week.

The partnership includes United Cerebral Palsy, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Kidney Foundation.  A quick search of the three charities neighborhood pickup schedule at www.donatetogetherhawaii.com helps you easily determine which charity will be in your neighborhood that week so you can schedule a pickup accordingly.

It’s very easy to schedule a pickup online and they even send you an email reminder prior to your scheduled day so you remember to leave the items out.

We have some clients who like to schedule a pickup regularly just because it forces them to continually declutter and generate more donations for these organizations.

P.S.  I am considering putting together a discussion group for the new year.  It would be an 8-week session, based on the inspirational downsizing book I’ve been talking about, “Let It Go” by Peter Walsh.  The cost would be nominal ($40 total for all 8 sessions, plus the cost of the book), and the meetings would take place on Wednesdays in Kaimuki from 9AM-10AM, starting the first week in January.

Is this something that may interest you?  Please contact me with your thoughts!

What if you could DRAMATICALLY improve your life in just 5 minutes a day?

You CAN!

I have heard about this practice for some years now, but only picked it up myself recently.  And I’m loving it already!

It’s called “The Five-Minute Journal”. The basic premise is starting and ending your day with gratitude.

Now we’ve all heard time and again that having an “attitude of gratitude” is good for you, but this book gives you the physical trigger to actually do it!

Here’s what this book and practice can be for you:

A daily journal to recognize the joy in everyday life

  • Begin the day right: When you start the day on the right note, things automatically start to fall in place. Every day.
  • Cultivate Gratitude: Gratitude is the opposite of depression and anxiety. It’s the conscious experience of appreciation of the gifts in our lives and the results are tangible.
  • Reflection: Ending the day on the right note can be essential to a good night’s sleep, eliminating negative thought loops and learning more about yourself.

Here’s to your organized, joy-filled life!

The first suggestion was “make your bed every day”.

It seems this former US Navy Admiral agrees. 🙂

Thanks to Cousin Leo for sharing this midweek inspiration with me…

HINT: It’s about more than just making your bed and it’s worth the 5 minute watch! Prepare to BE INSPIRED!

P.S. I’m 100% on my no-sugar goal and 81% on my 10,000 steps goal thus far (16 days into the challenge).  I better “step up” my game! 😉

Yesterday my “PPP” (Peak Performance Partner) asked me to join her in a 30 day challenge, based on the 3 minute Matt Cutt TED talk featured below.

So starting August 1, I will be walking 10,000+ steps a day and eating no refined sugar for 30 days.

I already have a daily Fitbit goal of 10,000 steps, but I don’t always make it. I already limit my refined sugar intake but want to step it up a notch with complete elimination. This “challenge” and my accountability to my PPP will make me take both of these goals more seriously!

What can you do over the next 30 days that will add (something good) or subtract (something not so good) from your life?

Some tangible ideas for a 30-day-challenge related to home organization are:

*Make the bed every day
*Pick up the living room every night before bed
*Do all the dishes and clear out the sink every night before bed
*Do a load of laundry daily (to avoid the end of the week pileup)
*Purge 1+ items every day
*Don’t buy anything on the Internet
*Don’t go shopping (groceries excepted)
Here’s to your organized life!

Nancy Nino

P.S. If you do decide to do a 30 day challenge, please share with me! I will be here to check in and cheer you on in your challenge!
