As I prepare for the inaugural Productivity Incubator, I am reading a lot about habits and smart goal setting. I was recently exposed to James Clear who talks about using “Identity-Based Habits” to help you meet your goals.

Reading Clear’s article that outlines this habit-based approach to goals, it occurred to me that one habit I’ve maintained very regularly over the last few months is my “green drink” habit. I start 4-5 mornings a week with a green drink.

It got me thinking…”Why am I able to drink a green drink regularly?” (NOTE: I actually asked myself “Why am I able to juice regularly?” but my cousin Leo quickly informed me that juicing and nutrient extraction with the NutriBullet are two entirely different things….excuuuuuuuuuuuuse, me!)

1. It’s easy.
The NutriBullet makes drink prep a breeze, and (probably most importantly), it’s super easy to clean.

2. I have all the materials on hand.
I usually have greens on hand anyway, but now I just make sure that I have fresh and frozen fruits on hand as well. Open fridge, dump a variety of stuff in the bullet, blast. You’re done!

3. I get quick results.
It’s not just easy; it’s speedy! Not just the green drink process, but also the results. I FEEL better almost immediately. I have no clue if it’s psychosomatic or if it’s legit, but frankly, my dear, I don’t give a …. I. FEEL. GREAT. That makes me want to do it every morning. Why wouldn’t I want to start my day with this fruit-veggie bomb that’s going to make me feel like a million bucks and is going to set my foundation for the day?

This is where more of James Clear’s wisdom comes in:

The key to building lasting habits,” Clear asserts, “is focusing on creating a new identity first. Your current behaviors are simply a reflection of your current identity. What you do now is a mirror image of the type of person you believe that you are (either consciously or subconsciously).”

Clear suggests the “Recipe for Sustained Success” is a two-step process.

1. Decide the type of person you want to be.
2. Prove it with to yourself with small wins.

Who is the person I want to be?

I want to be a person who treasures the temple that is my body and nourishes it with nutritious, fresh food daily. I want to have skin that glows and I want to feel grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!

How do I do it?

I make a quick, easy, delicious NutriBullet blast each morning. The process takes about 6 minutes from start to finish (including cleaning), and off I go!

I was even able to maintain the habit when I took a trip to CA in November. I stayed with my sister, who also owns a Nutribullet. I let her know about my latest obsession so she would expect my “blasting” each morning. I went online and ordered a Safeway delivery of produce for the night I was to arrive. All she had to do was make a little room in the fridge. For those weeks I worked in CA in November, I felt settled and ready to rock as I was still having my blast each morning, just like back at home in HI!
